NYC Firefighter Steals Dead Man's Credit Cards For Airpods

A firefighter from Manhattan has swiped the credit cards off a dead man during a call to go on a spending spree the next day, to which he was eyeing AirPods at Target.

Sylus McKenzie, an FDNY officer for four years, pulled off this scheme while attending a 911 call for an unresponsive man in Manhattan on January 11th 2021.

This resident was pronounced dead at the scene, but that didn't stop the officer.

He left the deceased's home as other responders were trying to seal it. It was discovered afterwards that his credit cards were missing.

McKenzie spent the next morning, between 9AM and 11AM, visiting multiple stores trying to use the victim's cards to spend $1,123.21.

He visited a gas station, supermarket and Target.

He charged $250 in merchandise from stores in the Bronx, and had attempted to spend $800 more on goodies.

He was arraigned last week on many charges including grand larceny, attempted identity theft, criminal impersonation, and official misconduct.

“The defendant, a firefighter in the New York City Fire Department, allegedly stole an American Express card and a Mastercard while responding to a 911 call at the Manhattan home of a patient who died."

“A day later, the defendant allegedly went to various stores in the Bronx and made purchases using the stolen cards."

“These alleged actions are reprehensible, even more so because he is a member of the city’s Bravest and violated the public trust.”

He is due back in court on September 7th, this year.
