The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium have announced that their new edition, a female elephant calf born in July, has sadly developed "serious medical conditions."

The staff are eagerly awaiting her recovery.

The African elephant baby is staying at the zoo's International Conservation Center in Somerset County, and is yet to be named.

Representatives from the zoo have explained that her conditions include "insufficient weight gain" which is putting her overall health at risk.

She is nursing from her mother and both are in round the clock care.

It was stated she "responded positively" to a recent plasma transfusion in hopes to adjust some of those medical concerns.

"Her overall health condition remains at a critical stage."

Dr. Joe Gaspard, Director of Animal Health, Science, and Conservation at the zoo has said, "We are very concerned but hopeful about the calf's prospect for recovery. She has several serious medical conditions that are actively being treated, but she is proving to be a fighter. Along with the attentive care she is receiving from mum, the Elephant Care and Animal Health teams are tirelessly working towards a positive outcome."

Due to where she is staying, the general public are unable to see her while she recovering.
