Turkish Airlines has announced a new Sydney to Istanbul route, following the success of its Melbourne to Istanbul route.
Starting in December, Aussies will get the chance to board direct flights from Sydney to Istanbul, via Malaysia, and return.
This route has never been available from this airport.
In late 2026, the service is set to shift to a non-stop service, however, the exact date is yet to be announced. This date is dependent on new aircraft delivery schedules.
Sydney Airport has said this will be a "groundbreaking service that will revolutionise travel between Australia and Europe."
“This announcement of direct flights marks a significant milestone for travel to Europe, offering passengers seamless access to hundreds of destinations from Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul hub."
“Today’s announcement is also incredibly important for the Sydney and NSW economies and speaks to the impact of international aviation in supporting our visitor economy.”
For some, this route will be a direct gateway into Turkiye, while for others, it will provide a new service to travel to over 340 destinations across 130 countries.
The Istanbul to Melbourne route officially opened in March this year.
After the inaugural flight, the Minister for Jobs and Industry, Natalie Hutchins said the service was “a significant milestone."
"Having such an important player in Australia is great for this whole country because it gives our travellers, our tourists, our businesses [and] our exporters more choice and more competition."
The Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines, Dr. Ahmet Bolat said, "Australia, with its breathtaking landscapes and warm-hearted people, now becomes the 130th country to join our expansive network, signifying our presence across six continents."
The launch prices will cost a minimum of A$1,489 and will be available from September 12th until December 31st, 2024.
Additionally, they will be available from December 4th, 2024 until May 31st 2025.
