Jayne Hrdlicka, Virgin chief executive believes international flights could happen again by Christmas. She is also optimistic Australians will reach the vaccination goals which will end lockdowns and reopen state borders.

She is, though, highly against vaccine passports as they would impose completely different restrictions on those flying between states.

"If you do the math, across the country, we should be in a position where we're 80 per cent vaccinated, you know, at the latest end of November, early December. If we're well vaccinated, we have the most vulnerable, vaccinated and protected. I'm not sure what we're waiting for, in opening up travel quarters with other countries that are well vaccinated."

Virgin Australia has also announced they are introducing mandatory vaccinations for their 6,000 employees.

Qantas announced the same policy "no jab, no work" on August 18th.

Virgin hope to have all frontline staff vaccinated by November 15th, and all office-based workers vaccinated by March 31st.

The company also wants all suppliers, which includes catering staff, fully vaccinated.

Michael Kaine, the Transport Workers Union National Secretary has stated the consultation Virgin has with workers must be genuine.

"Evidence has shown that vaccine hesitancy among aviation workers is not the issue, but other barriers like appointment shortages, roster requirements and fear of losing pay have impacted vaccination rates."

"Workers with genuine health concerns must receive support rather than be singled out, ridiculed or punished."
