Members residing in a South Nashville, Tennessee neighbourhood are taking turns in overnight shifts hoping to run out criminals.

"It makes me feel a lot more comfortable with my family. I have a house full of ladies, with a boy on the way. So, it makes me feel a lot safer," said Lance Blocker who owns a fitness centre.

A post on the neighbourhood's Facebook page states they residents will be armed and patrolling the area in the early hours of the morning.

Metro Police have encouraged the help of the community.

"We obviously cannot be everywhere at the same time. So if they see something, they can contact the police. And then we can send out - whether it's patrol officers or I can set up extra patrols. So, it's very important for the communication," said Community Coordinator for the South Precinct of MNPD, Deniz Ismailovic.

"We obviously do not want anyone, especially at night time, to approach in the dark. Let the police officers do their job. They can just be eyes and ears for us."

Lance Blocker has said he's already seeing a difference since introducing the night watch.

"Just recently there were two incidents where they actually ran off two criminals. So yes, I think it will help.  think the word is getting around."
