The top cop in Chicago has placed blame on the court system for releasing violent offenders during a wave of gun violence in Chicago, Illinois.

During a press conference, Police Superintendent David Brown addressed this issue after an attack recently left at least 12 dead and 70 shot across the city.

"What we can do different is challenge the courts to render Chicago safe. Holding offenders in jail longer not releasing murderers back into our community. That's what we can different."

It has been noted that 90 people in Chicago have been charged with murder and then been released n electronic monitoring. Chief Judge Timothy Evans has said these were either first-offenders or self-defence.

It has been stated that Chicago police are doing their job and that city courts need stricter consequences for violent offenders.

"Can the courts hold people in jail who are violent, who have been arrested, who have been charged with murder. Murder. I don't think there is another city in this country releasing people who have been charged with murder back into the community on electronic monitoring."

A press release was issued by the Chief Judge's office saying, "Judges are guided by looking at the criminal backgrounds of defendants before them. Only those individuals judged to pose a clear and present danger to society are kept in jail before trial."

A report has stated that at least five of the victims from the recent attack were under the age of 18.
