Tourist Carves Initials Into Ancient Pompeii Site

A tourist who hales from Britain has been caught carving his daughters' initials into an Ancient Roman house in Pompeii.

He has yet to be named, but reportedly used a sharp object, making five indentations.

The House of the Vestals is claimed to be one of the "most sophisticated and impressive" houses in Pompeii at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Security spotted the man messing with a wall at the entrance of the house. It was confirmed he had made five carvings and he was apprehended at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The initials “JW LMW MW” were carved into an upper part of the wall, as well as “07/08/24” and “MYLAW” into a lower part. It's believed the initials are his and his two daughters.

He was reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Torre Annunziata, Italy.

Reportedly, he apologised and said he left the carvings to record the visit.

Now, he will be required to pay for the restoration of the area.
