Police Ignore Lead On Murder Case for 13 Years

It appears police ignored a key tip in the grisly Gilgo Beach murders case for over a decade, with a general description of the suspect, along with a make and model of the car he drove, failing to act upon them for 13 years.

It wasn't until a new task force scoured over evidence, reinterviewing a pimp when clues pointed to Rex Heuermann (59), an architect now charged with three counts of murder.

The critical lead came from the pimp for Amber Lynn Costello, one of three women {allegedly} killed by Rex in 2010.

Not long after the murders, he was interviewed by police and identified the killer as a bulky "ogre" driving a distinctive Chevrolet Avalanche.

Ex-NYPD Chief Rodney Harrison took over as Suffolk County police commissioner last year, reopening the case and connecting the dots.

In March 2022, a new task force was chosen to investigate the murders, with Rex in its sights.

“This was the first time Rex Heuermann’s name had come up and the first time that he had been identified as a potential suspect."

“At that time, the task force worked as a team to move forward with that information, and the investigation ultimately confirmed that Rex Heuermann was in fact the individual responsible for at minimum the deaths of three women."

Rex fits the description of the pimp's "ogre" as he is 6 foot 6 and weighs around 270 pounds.

He was arrested outside his offices and charged with three counts of murder for Amber Lynn Costello (27), Melissa Barthelemy (24), and Megan Waterman (22).

He is also the prime suspect in the slaying of one other woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25), naming the victims as the "Gilgo Four."

Prosecutors claim he solicited escorts on Craiglist, and occasionally used unregistered "burner" phones" to make contact with victims.

Cops also found "a lot of torture porn” and “depictions of women being abused, raped and even killed” in his possession following his arrest.
