Suspicious Fire Destroys Historic Commercial Hotel

A fire has broken out at a historical hotel in regional NSW that arson investigators are calling suspicious.

The Commercial Hotel in Yass, in the Southern Tableland caught ablaze just before 2AM on Monday.

Firefighters were working for 5 hours before it started to come under control.

Around 40 firefighters attended and helped try an stop the blaze spreading to other properties nearby, including a carpet store.


A specialist Fire and Rescue NSW aerial pumping truck was brought to the scene so the fire could be attacked from above.

The blaze became extinguished after six hours and an an exclusion zone was established due to the fear of walls collapsing.

As of Monday afternoon, only a shell of the building remained.

No injuries were reported from the scene.


This historical hotel was built in the 1840s, receiving its liquor license in 1850.

It had however become a state of disrepair after the operation ended in 2005.

The veranda was only meant to removed last year.
