Two parents from Georgia have been arrested for child abuse and negligence after their starving 10-year-old son was spotted wandering the neighbourhood looking for a grocery store to beg for food.
Tyler and Krista Schindley were arrested after their neighbours found their son lost in the streets last Friday, the child begging police to "please not make him go back."
It was said the boy was intentionally starved and only weighed around 36 pounds (approx. 16.3kg) at the point of rescue, the weight of an average 4-year-old.
“This child was, simply put, being starved to death, and it is tragic,” Griffin District Attorney Marie Broder said.
“I truly believe that if he had not gotten out of that home, this would be a very different case.”
The two parents have been accused of locking the boy inside his bedroom and leaving him alone in the home for "extended periods of time, and on multiple occasions, with no access to lights, food, clothing or adult interaction and/or assistance."
It has also been alleged he was left without hot water, views of the outside, toilet paper and human interaction. Also that he was beaten at one point which caused further injuries.
He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently being treated for malnutrition and a low heart rate.
He also suffered from "dental injury and disfiguration" as a result of the starvation, which the parents failed to treat.
“This case is just disturbing. It’s heartbreaking.”
Officials have stated there were other children in the home, and they have since been placed into the custody of the Department of Family and Children's Services.
The parents have been charged with criminal attempt to commit a felony, false imprisonment, two battery charges and three cruelty to children charges.
