13-Year-Old Boy Shot On Playground

A 13-year-old boy was shot in the head on Friday afternoon, while hanging out in a playground in Staten Island. He is now brain-dead.

The boy has yet to be identified, but remains in critical condition at the Richmond University Medical Center in New York.

A video of the assault showed the victim standing with multiple other young people around the basketball courts, seconds before gunfire rang out on May 19th around 3:50PM.

One bullet struck the boy on the left side of his head before exiting the right side.

He immediately dropped to the ground while the other fled.

Two men fled up a path, while the other five ran to nearby houses.

The boy has no criminal history and was found lying face-up near the basketball court, unconscious and bleeding from the head.

It was reported a community advocate had been trying to help him escape street violence prior to the incident.

One witness claims he and the victim had just left school that day, headed to a bodega, and then to the park, hanging out for about 45 minutes.

He then suddenly heard two gunshots and saw the victim collapse. He ran away and called emergency services.

Another witness claims she was walking with her elderly mother, saw the victim fall, blood streaming from his head. She claims to not have seen any shooters.

The Mayor has urged to find those responsible.

“Too many guns, too many people who are dangerous are allowed to have guns, and they are, often, extreme recidivists who are clearly coming on our streets. This … really breaks my heart to have a 13-year-old child shot … we will find the people responsible.”

This shooting comes as major crimes rose 38% this year until May 14th, compared to the same time last year.

Murders have especially rose 250%, while robberies and felony assaults also rose.

The shooting is being investigated through the NYPD's 120th Precinct Detective Squad and the Staten Island Homicide Squad.
