A federal court in Kansas City, Missouri has returned a two-count indictment that charges a Missouri man with hate crime and firearm violations after shooting a teenager with the intent to kill.

The reasoning behind the shooting was the victim's sexual orientation.

Malachi Robinson (25) is being charged with violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

He is also being charged with using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

He allegedly shot a teenager with a 9mm handgun due to his sexual orientation. He left the victim with significant non-fatal injuries.

Robinson will be facing up to life behind bars for the hate crime charge and a minimum of 10 years behind bars for the firearm charge, consecutive to any other sentence.

In a court of law, any indictment is solely an allegation. Any defendant is innocent until or unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
