On July 19th, eight Nigerians, five of which are members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) were freed after being kidnapped by gunmen in Rivers State waters.

The news was broken on July 24th.

The individuals who were abducted are said to be in good physical condition and a detailed report is to be released sometime next week.

The group were travelling to Port Harcourt from the Kula area in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area.

Dr. Bashir Jamoh has confirmed all waters of the coastal states will be covered during a daily patrol to ensure no more criminal activity occurs.

He also indicated the Special Maritime Intelligence Unit will "up its ante" using a "carrot and stick" policy to draw youth away from marine-related crime.

Dr. Jamoh has stated the education of youths regarding the non-profitability of marine-related crimes will be engaged in order to develop the nation.
