Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has called Australia's vaccine rollout "a colossal failure," believing the government didn't purchase enough vaccines, and as a result, the borders will stay closed until at least early 2022.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said that a bigger supply of vaccines wouldn't mean an earlier release from lockdown, as what was needed was an effective, properly enforced lockdown.

Turnbull believes not enough supply of the Pfizer vaccine were purchased, and too many AstraZeneca vaccines were bought amid hesitancy.

"It's the biggest failure of public administration I can recall. It was a colossal failure and the problem is you can't wind the clock back and fix what should have been done last year."

"The very reason we are locked down - which is so frustrating when so many other parts of the world are opening up - is simply because our government failed to buy enough vaccines."

Last weekend, Australia's main drug regulator hanged their recommendation and encouraged more to take up the AstraZeneca vaccine, considering only 16% of Australians over the age of 16 are fully vaccinated.
