Many have been injured, and at least two have died due to an acetic acid leak arised from the LyondellBasell facility in La Porte, Texas.
La Porte Office of Management has said, "The leak has been isolated, and air monitoring at the facility perimeter indicates no offsite impact. There is no shelter in place or other protective actions being recommended at this time."
Rachel K. Neutzler, spokesperson for the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office has said, "Right now we can confirm two fatalities."
LyondellBasell has released a statement saying, "At least four people sustained burns."
Along with the two fatalities, 35 people have suffered minor symptoms, five were transported to local hospitals in order to treat more serious injuries, and two people are in critical condition.
The main part of the leak included a chemical acid used in food-grade vinegar.
Those who came across the acid can expect to experience irritation and burns, as well as difficulty breathing and swallowing.
An investigation is taking place to discover what caused the leak, but confirmation was made that there was no explosion or fire at the facility.
The first report came through around 7:30pm.
